Customised Roof Waterproofing Systems for Long-Term Protection

By GCP Waterproofing Technical Specialist

Introduction

In Asia, the requirements for roof waterproofing system can be as varied as the roofs themselves. Being the highest point in a building, roofs help to protect the building from weather elements. The right type of waterproofing material is crucial to the roofing system as it serves the main function of keeping water out of the building.

Having worked on re-roofing projects ranging from classic, flat roofs to highly complex roofs, we have helped clients develop customised roof waterproofing systems, which will fit their specific design, climate and application needs.

Common requirements for roof waterproofing

  • Reliable and high-quality waterproofing materials: Detailed and intricate roof structures demand light-weight, long-life and permanently flexible material. Additionally, fully bonded material is required so that there will be no water-tracking between the membrane and the building.
  • Long-term protection for new or old roofs: The materials need to be chemically resistant (against sewage gases, etc.) as proven through test reports.
  • Fast turnaround: For re-roofing or repair, the project duration can be very short (as short as one week) to minimise disruption. Hence, a waterproofing solution with fast turnaround time is needed.

Choosing a roof waterproofing system

Part 1: On-site inspection

Typically, we will first conduct an on-site inspection to identify and understand the site requirements and challenges. We speak with the relevant parties to understand the building's use, the schedule, the current roof conditions, and so on.  We also note any particular details that the applicator should be aware of during installation. For example, before the waterproofing application, it is important that applicator check and replace corrosive screws, and thoroughly clean the roof. This ensures that the waterproofing material can be applied properly and effectively.

Part 2: Customised solution and application

Both self-adhered roofing underlayment and liquid-applied waterproofing can be used on roofs. When deciding on a roof waterproofing system, here are some of the important considerations:

Type of Building and Roof Requirements

  • What is the building type? Industrial or residential?
  • What is the height or movement of the building?
  • What is the building's service life?
  • Any energy efficient requirements or insulation needs?
  • Any fire resistance needs?

Type of Roof and Usage

  • What is the roof material? (Metal, wood, concrete?)
  • Does it need to be resistant to high-heat?
  • What is the roof being used for?  (As a car park, green roof or helicopter landing?)
  • Does the roof need to hold any chemical containers?
  • Does it need to be accessible to people or vehicles?
  • What is the weight limit the roof needs to bear?
  • How big is the area for waterproofing application? (Can machines be brought on to the roof for waterproofing works?  For example, is application of liquid waterproofing by spray equipment feasible?)

Type of Regulatory Requirements

  • Any regulations to meet?
  • Does the material need to be VOC free?

Part 3: Technical support

  • After proposing a customised solution that meets project requirements, we also work with our trained waterproofing applicator to provide technical support during installation. Apart from quality waterproofing material that is right for the type of application area, professional installation is critical to ensure waterproofing performance.

We work only with approved applicators who receive on-going training. In addition, we make it a point to visit job sites and conduct on-site inspection.

In Asia, we have over 30 years of experience offering professional consultation and customised roof waterproofing solutions, including re-roofing a chemical factory in Thailand and waterproofing the roof of major hospitals in Singapore. Contact our experts to find out how GCP can meet all your project's needs.
